For individuals (entrepreneurs, designers, DEI consultants, leaders, etc) who want to grow their own capacity to do and teach/lead equity-centered design or lead through a lens of equity design.
At the core of our work is the belief that history is a series of design decisions made by people, and so those things can be (re)designed to be more equitable. Equity is a verb, and so we believe it is incredibly important to build capacity in individuals to make different design decisions -- to teach, encourage, and give them the space to design for equity.
Folks will learn and practice by working on organizational issues that are surfaced and decided upon inside our process. You will get support from us with resources, coaching, and accountability the whole way through, ultimately emerging with a set of shared experiences and vocabulary out of which to define and practice new ways of working and being.
Offered as a stand-alone service for clients who have built sufficient equity capacity via another exposure to us, or as an adjunct to a different service, eXd Coaching combines highly-individualized skill-building with emotional support. This kind of coaching is a powerful vector for awareness, education, and the development of new equity-oriented behaviors in individuals. We find that this coaching, when done for a majority or entirety of the staff, has a synergistic effect when completed in tandem with design-cycle engagements -- in these cases, the organization undergoes both top-down equity renovation, and bottom-up support and skill-building. eXd Coaching is also enormously effective for building trust, creating safety, and giving permission, power, and visibility to marginalized voices and experiences within the organization -- which is a mandatory but oftentimes overlooked precondition for making an organization more equitable.
Immunity to Change (ITC) is a framework we use for personal and team growth around issues of REDI (Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) -- it addresses new beliefs and new behaviors, and closely roadmaps people along entirely individualized plans in order to help them make incremental positive changes. This individual self-awareness and personal-transformation work, when completed in tandem with organizational eXd work, catalyzes both a material shift in the day-to-day workings of the organization and in the levels of empathy, trust, and support between its individual staff.
